Honey-Moon Dream Turned Cold

Special Thanks To Guest Writer :

He is old enough to be my Dad. I had a mutual friend introduce me and after hearing him read this story he wrote (last February), I knew it was what I wanted to share this week in honor of Valetine’s Day (as I felt it would be relatable to the largest number of people). I hope you enjoy this special memory as much as I do. I would love to hear your stories (if you have one) in the comments as well. -Grace

Forty-five years ago in 1978 was the Big Blizzard, I will never forget. I just got married to Susan 7-days before the blizzard of 78 came in.

We had a 7-day ski trip planned in Colorado. What a great time we had together skiing and playing in the snow. Susan was so beautiful inside and out. If you was fortunate enough to have ever known Susan you would agree. I was so lucky that Susan chose me to be her husband.

On the way home interstate 70 got closed due to all the wrecks. We had to take US 40. We decided to stop in St. Louis Missouri and spend the night. Well it was history from then on, that’s when the 1978 blizzard hit.

We got snowed-in, in St. Louis Missouri for 5-days. You would think that was great being newlyweds. But back then we had no charge cards, no cell phones, only cash and we were running out of money. We got up early in the morning to start the drive home.

It took us 10 hours to drive to Terre Haute and we only had enough cash for gas and food that we bought at a gas station, no money for a Hotel. I will never forget that Susan told me she was scared to death and she started to cry. Deep down I was scared also and l prayed to myself that God would get us home safe.

I remember I tried to make her laugh by telling her some jokes, that worked only for a short time. I had to come up with something else to help her feel safe and keep her mind off the situation that we both were in.

I told Susan that I loved her and told her let’s go to our Happy Place. I remember she said where is that! I said close your eyes, then pretend that we are camping and riding horses in Brown County. She said it’s working, then we both fell asleep, holding each other.

We spent the night in the car, I kept it running so we could stay warm. We took off early in the morning, it took us 12 hours to drive to Greenfield due to the snow and all the wrecks.

We finally made it to Greenfield to Susan parents house Lucky and Millie Giddings, best in-laws a person could ever have. Wow, what a honeymoon we had together and a story to tell.

As I look back, it was the best time of my life, I sure miss Susan, RIP my love. I often wonder what my life would have been if Susan was still with me.

Always put your better half first and do something extra for them, your life will be so much better. I’m sending Prayers to everyone that is fighting cancer, stay positive… FYI: We dated for 5 years and were married for 10 years (Our son was 7 when she left this earth to live in heaven)…
